This was the Cribby "no wind no waves" wavesailing course, held at Calshot by Solent Sailboards. There were 5 students, one of whom came from Derby to be there, the rest from more southerly places like Poole, Reigate and London, and one was a 10 year old, Henry!

Cribby started with a rigging session, explaining the requirements of wavesails and the niceties of footstrap adjustment. He got me to rig my 5.5. on a 400 skinny rather than the specified 430, which was pretty interesting, and I'll be trying it for sure next time I get to use it (which judging by the last umpteen entries, will be next time out!).

Lots of time then spent on pumping in/out of the harness and in the footstraps, to maximise effectiveness in generating speed for the "getting out the back without falling in" adventure. This really appears to work - I tried it when the thermal at Calshot kicked in and it really kicks things into gear, which would be crucial on a slow-to-plane wave board. We also practised tacking - I was getting pretty good at it, but then it was on the grass...

After a lunchtime theory session on how to find waves, areas (not to) sail, etiquette and 4 Things Not To Do, we got into the rubber on the hottest day of the year to learn how to save our masts in breaking waves and, even more useful, not lose the kit! Cribby's simulated break, involving counting to 5 while we faced the choice of waterstarting or going for a save, actually works... and better to try it whilst there aren't actually any waves!

Worth it? Let's see how I get on next time at Saunton/Gwithian/Hayling/Lee-on-theSolent and other well-known wave venues! ;-)
